“For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me will find it.” - Matthew 16:25
In the year 1519, Hernán Cortés arrived in the “New World” with 600 men, and upon arrival, made history by “burning his ships.” This sent a clear message to his men. There is no turning back! Two years later, he succeeded in his complete conquest of the Aztec empire. God may not be a huge fan of conquering the Aztecs but he is a firm believer of being ALL IN! Lord, help me to realize that some or half or most is not ALL and You want ALL of me in order for me to have ALL of You. “‘I am the bread of life,’ Jesus told them. ‘No one who comes to me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in me will ever be thirsty again.’” - John 6:35
God always keeps his promises. He doesn't always give us what we want. He doesn't always give us what we think He should give us. However, He always follows through on what He says. One of the main issues that we have is that we don't always know what He says because we don't typically allow ourselves to listen. Lord, help me to read and hear and listen to what You have promised so I am no longer surprised or upset by the outcomes. “Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought at a price. So glorify God with your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Most misinterpreted/misused two verses EVER by those who want to justify their exercise addiction or shame those who eat meat. The fact is that temples have an inside as well. I went into a house recently that had great "curb appeal" but the inside looked like a bomb went off. I know people like that too. Lord, help me to focus on my heart and mind and spirit as much as my lats and biceps and glutes. “Accept my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than pure gold. For wisdom is better than jewels, and nothing desirable can equal it.” Proverbs 8:10-11
Simple question ... Will you learn and gain more wisdom and knowledge from researching and writing a paper or typing in a query into ChatGPT? If you struggle for the correct answer, you have proven my point. Lord, help me to realize that You have created us to be wise and to seek knowledge and not simply be a robot or dependent on robots, but dependent on YOU. “They do everything to be seen by others: They enlarge their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels. The greatest among you will be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Matthew 23:5, 11-12
What the heck is a phylacteries? A phylactery is a small leather box containing Hebrew texts, worn by Jewish men at morning prayer as a reminder to keep the law. Some wore larger than needed ones to attempt to demonstrate how great they are. Having a large phylactery is like having a large following on social media. It has no real value and it really doesn't matter to anyone but it makes you feel more special. Lord, help me to realize what matters most and that promoting myself will only result in emptiness and have no eternal value. “Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” - Philippians
Most older men tend to wear the same things every day. Same shirt. Same pants. Probably haven't bought anything new in years. And if they have a spouse or children who buy them new clothes, they probably don't wear them. WHY? Because old men don't care how they look and they don't care what you think about how they look. People who have lived a long time have figured out that worrying about what they wear, or anything for that matter, will not serve any good purpose. When we are young, we worry about the pimple on our nose because we think people care about the pimple on our nose. As we get older, we don't care about the pimple on our nose, because we are thankful we have a nose and a face and air in our lungs and healthy kids and purpose in life. Lord, help us to pray and help us to be thankful for what we have and avoid worrying about what we don't. “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14
Our past is often our biggest barrier to our future. Our past stresses us out, depresses us, frustrates us, tenses us up and prevents us from being free and moving forward at the appropriate pace and trajectory. Our past can also give us a false sense of expectations and an unrealistic view of the difficult times ahead. Whether it is our successes or failures/trials of our past, our future is full of promise and hope, if we allow ourselves to trust in God's grace and love. Lord, I thank you for my past, no matter how difficult it may have been, because it has only prepared me for the future, a future that I am excited and hopeful for. "Love one another deeply as brothers and sisters. Take the lead in honoring one another." - Romans 12:10
My brother has had a rule for his two boys when they have gone on any trip/vacation for the past 20+ years. "Make sure everyone else has the best time ever!" If we are all honest, most of us don't wake up thinking about how to make everyone else's day the best. Instead, we are consumed with how to make our day the best, or the easiest or the least painful. Lord, help me to make those around me better. “If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.” John 15:22
Ignorance is described as "no knowing something" while Stupidity is described as knowing something but not acting appropriately on that knowledge. Better to be ignorant than stupid but the best is to be neither. Lord, help me to avoid ignorance and then help me to not be stupid. |
