The assignment is that as we get older, we then get wiser and stop doing stupid stuff.  Unfortunately, age does not automatically result in maturity and wisdom.  We all fail to learn from our experiences and refuse to trust those who know better than we do.

​Finish this sentence ... "The first step in recovery is to ... ".  Everyone worries.  That is why God reminds us to not worry.  He doesn't say "if" but "when".  And He doesn't give a suggestion, even though that is how we take it.  God knows that probably half of our waking life is wasted with worry, anxiety, doubt, insecurity, jealousy, fear, regret, shame, guilt, embarrassment, and a ton of other thoughts that keep us from anything productive.  So the first step ... admit your problem.  Then the REAL first step after that is to quit trying to solve all your problems on your own and ask God how to solve them.  And He will basically tell you that they aren't problems but they are simply situations to embrace as part of life and have peace that He will help you through them.

Lord, I don't have problems.  I am the problem!!!!! Because I don't trust You enough with the little and even big things in life that waste my time and energy.

There is a difference between "knowing" about something (being able to remember, recognize or recall it), and "understanding" something (comprehending it and being able to explain it), and truly "appreciating" something (valuing it to the point of having feelings and attitudes about it).  We know a lot, we understand quite a bit, but we don't appreciate much.  We should appreciate God and who He is and what He has done and not simply know about Him.

Lord, thank You for who You are and help me to know You more and not simply know about You.

God can use all kinds of things to get his point across.  Kids are a great example.  As a parent, your kids do all kinds of stuff and then say, "I am sorry mom, I love you" or "I am sorry dad, I love you" and then 15 min later they do the same thing.  It isn't their fault.  They just haven't figured out that "sorry" and/or "I love you" isn't a "don't punish me/get out of jail free card" but instead it should be a communication of "I did something I shouldn't have and will try not to do it again".  A typical parent response to their child's "I'm sorry/I love you - repeat the offense" cycle is "if you are truly sorry and you love me, you wouldn't do it again".  And then the observant parent realizes ...

Lord, forgive me for saying things but doing the opposite and for taking advantage of your mercy and grace, and forgive me for not showing my love with my actions.

Since the dawn of time, an interesting phenomena has existed.  Those we love the most, we often treat the worst.  We routinely treat strangers with a smile and a pleasant persona, but show little patience and respond sharply to our closest friends and family.  We love our parents but often treat them like crap.  We love our spouse or siblings but bite off their heads when they don't act as we have expected.  We dismiss it as "they know I love them" which is true, but should not a give us a license to be a jerk.

"To recognize the worth, quality, gratitude, or rising value of something or someone".  Unfortunately, we don't do this enough.  We complain when things go wrong and we take for granted when things go right.  Rarely do we appreciate those things that go smoothly, especially the little things but often the big things.  More rarely do we appreciate the help provided when things are rough.

Lord, a huge shout out to You for taking care of things, even when I don't see You are working behind the scenes, and help me to appreciate Your value when life sucks, and I need Your help instead of trying to go it alone and complaining when it isn't working out.

There are many people who have gone through life  and have never been a member of a team.  Any kind of team.  Sports team.  Work team.  Volunteer team.  A team is a group of people working together for a common goal.  A lot of families consider themselves "a team" but honestly, not many families have all of the members on the same page and that is why many families struggle.  At work, the boss may say "we are a team" but in truth, there are many simply there for the pay or health insurance and not showing up to work to "change the world" or some other goal.  The fact is that life itself is a TEAM sport.  We are not meant to go through life alone and for our own desires or purposes.

Lord, help me to fully appreciate that life is meant to be lived with and for others and not by myself and for myself.

"Work Harder" or "Take it easy".  Those who work hard always think they need to work harder.  Those who have a more "relaxed" view of the world tend to see those who "work hard" as being "slaves to their jobs" or "work hards" and wish everyone would chill out.  The truth, as with most things, lies in between. Those who work hard both need and deserve some down time.  And those who have no problem relaxing could possibly spend a little more time getting stuff done to earn their down time.  Jesus was definitely not a slacker.  Jesus definitely found time to step away and focus on the main things that mattered.

Lord, help me to have the right balance in all things in my life.

Think about all of the time you spend with those you love and care about.  What are the conversations?  What are you doing and saying and experiencing?  It is good to just "hang out" and "chill" and "have fun", but if that is ALL that happens, each and ever time, then we need to consider whether or not we are maximizing these valuable and important relationships.  Do we take time to acknowledge that life is bigger than "having fun" and "hanging out" and that God and His plan is what is biggest.

My bestie, until they aren't.  My dream job, until it isn't.  My favorite, until it becomes less desirable than something else.  The reality is that things.  Sometimes it is those things that change and often time it is we that change.  Hopefully for the best but sometimes for the worst.  In a world of change, one thing always remains the same. And there is comfort in that consistency.

Lord, thank You for being the same, yesterday and today, and thank You that I always know what to expect from You, and I can also find You in the same place, all of the time.]]>
