We Lie Because We Are Selfish!

These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth to each other, and render true and sound judgment in your courts;  Zechariah 8:16

Every lie or false statement that we say can be linked back to our selfish nature and our innate desire to protect our "aspirational" image.  A lie allows us to be seen how we want or aspire to be seen as compared to the truth.  The scale tells my true weight but I can either tell people I weigh less or more.  I can wear a girdle to hide the true shape of my body so people think highly of my fitness, but the fact is that the fat is still underneath.  We lie to others to avoid conflict.  We lie to our loved ones to avoid them disliking us.  We say lies or we don't say anything to avoid speaking the truth.  We even lie to ourselves to make us feel better and hide our true insecurities.  Lies are selfish and we use them to feel better but in the long run, they remain a selfish hindrance that keeps us from being content with who God made us to be.  The truth truly will "set us free" from our selfishness.

Lord, help me to be honest with myself, with others and with You.
