Procrastination is not laziness. Procrastination is an emotional response. Procrastination occurs when we delay or avoid doing something that needs to be done. Procrastination is often a TRAUMA RESPONSE. Procrastination may occur when certain parts of a traumatic memory that has not been processed fully are unconsciously triggered. We procrastinate as a defense mechanism to avoid triggering negative feelings and emotions. We may not be able to understand why we put things off, or why we have a strong emotional response to being asked to do something. Procrastination is real. Now that we know what it is, we can control our emotions and move on from our past and create new experiences and memories that are positive and motivating.
