When things aren't going well, we tend to do one of two things: change our environment or sit around and complain about our environment. Job isn't going well, either change jobs or sit around and complain about it. Relationships aren't going well, either change the people around you or sit around and complain about the people in your life. Unfortunately, sometimes neither actions actually CHANGE anything because the thing that should be changed is not our circumstances but our attitude. A new job won't change how you feel about working and a new relationship won't change the way you treat others or expect from others. “Very often, a change of self is needed more than a change of scene.’ A.C. Benson

“Good is the enemy of great. And that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great. We don't have great schools, principally because we have good schools. We don't have great government, principally because we have good government. Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life.”― Jim Collins, Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't
“Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great.” John D. Rockefeller Hellen Keller became deaf and blind at the age of 19 months and famously went on to accomplish amazing things during her entire life. Ironically, one of her most memorable quotes uses words like "look" and "see" because Keller never focused on what she didn't have and never "saw" her disabilities as a disadvantage. We can choose to be a victim or we can choose victory over our failures or traumas. “When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.” Helen Keller
... Why not NOW?! No matter what happened before today, you can choose to start now to be the person you want to be. “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” Chinese Proverb
If you are expecting others to be your sole motivation AND if you are allowing others to distract you or discourage you from your goals, then you are pursuing the wrong things in life. If YOU are not passionate enough to motivate yourself AND if you are so swayed by what other people think, then the goal is obviously not that important to you. “If people are doubting how far you can go, go so far that you can’t hear them anymore.” —Michele Ruiz
How we respond to a job well done is as important as finishing the job itself. Unfortunately, many see accomplishments as a finish line and either celebrate and rest or simply look back and feel thankful that they "got through it". The best response to success is to appreciate our efforts and what has been achieved, without short changing our efforts, but it is also important to use that success to launch us to more opportunities ahead. "The reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more." Jonas Salk
“No one has a problem with the first mile of a journey. Even an infant could do fine for a while. But it isn’t the start that matters. It’s the finish line.” – Julien Smith
It is natural human behavior to begin something with passion and energy, to quickly find ourselves losing motivation and drive, to the point of fizzling out entirely or at best, limping across the finish line. Successful people finish what they started and more importantly, finish stronger than they began. “Many will start fast, few will finish strong.” Gary Ryan Blair
