Cause and effect. If I throw a ball up in the are, it most likely will come down. If I fill the ball with helium, it most likely will float away. If I do good things, most likely I will feel good about myself and expect good things to happen for me. If I do bad things, I hope that no one notices. We love cause and effect, especially when it works in our favor. We wish it didn't exist when it works against us. Often times our situation (cause) influences our attitude (effect). However, our joy should not be driven by our situation.
Lord, help my joy be present regardless of my situation.
