"How you deal with adversity reveals much about your character."
Lord, when I am tested, help me to pass the test and not sit there staring at the paper or crumple it up and storm out of the room.

“At the time of his distress, King Ahaz himself became more unfaithful to the Lord.” 2 Chronicles 28:22
"How you deal with adversity reveals much about your character." Lord, when I am tested, help me to pass the test and not sit there staring at the paper or crumple it up and storm out of the room.

’What then should we do?’ the crowds were asking him. He replied to them, ‘The one who has two shirts must share with someone who has none, and the one who has food must do the same.’ Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they asked him, ‘Teacher what should we do?’ He told them, ‘Don’t collect any more than what you have been authorized.’ Some soldiers also questioned him, ‘What should we do?’ He said to them, ‘Don’t take money from anyone by force or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.’” Luke 10-14
We often spend too much time thinking about how to "change the world" and much less time than we should thinking about how to change ourselves for the better. We don't need to make drastic changes. We simply must make the small changes in and around us. Lord, help me to change the world by first changing my heart and the small choices I can make each day. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." Galatians 5:22-23
If we place a completely full glass of water on a table and then bump the table, water spills out all over the table. If we hit the table even harder, water spills out on the table AND the floor. We are filled with all kinds of things. Love but also hate. Joy but also sadness. Peace but also anxiety. Patience but also discontent. Kindness but also selfishness. Goodness but also badness. Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control but also distrust, forcefulness and anger. Whatever we are full of, that is what spills out when we are either bumped or knocked over. Hopefully we are not full of ... Lord, help me to be filled with what I want spilling out when life bumps me or pushes me over. “And I pray this: that your love will keep on growing in knowledge and every kind of discernment," Philippians 9
Unfortunately, we limit ourselves by assuming that we are born with a specific trait or ability and those things don't change. "I am ...". It as if we came out of the womb and there was no opportunity for growth or change. Love is like most other characteristic or abilities, we can get better at it. The more we love, the better we get at love. However, like anything else, the less we do it, the more likely we will lose it. Lord, help me to love more so I can love better. “Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:28-31
Lord, thank You for being strong enough for both of us and help me to lean into Your strength and trust Your promises. “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks the door will be opened.” Matthew 7:7-8
Before computers and the "interweb", if you wanted a job, you would go to a Hallmark or Pay n' Save and buy some fancy overpriced "resume paper" and then find a typewriter and create a resume that had your name and address and work experience and then a list of your skills and character traits. One of the classics was "Self-Starter". Everyone seemed to list "Self-Starter". Basically, if you didn't list "Self-Starter", you were admitting that you were a "lazy piece of human existence and need someone to hold your hand so don't hire me or you will regret it." Employers want someone who is "intentional" and "proactive". So does God. Lord, help me to avoid sitting around in my pajamas and hope that the CEO of a Fortune 500 company knocks on my door to offer me a job and also help me to avoid sitting around in my pajamas and hoping You will magically make everything better. “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9
... term that is similar to the saying "what goes goes around, comes around" or "you reap what you sow". It is very challenging to see hard work NOT pay off. Unfortunately, that is how life works. There are no guarantees. There are no "sure things". Our time and effort does not always result in what we expect or desire. It can be exhausting to do good and not feel rewarded for it. However, one thing is true, when we sow poorly ... When we treat others badly ... When we do the wrong thing ... It will eventually come back to bite us. In the past week, I have had the "opportunity" to witness in other's lives the unfortunate results of decisions and lifestyles and attitudes that finally caught up with them. Lord, help me to be focused on HOW and WHY and not WHAT and WHEN and trust that You will work it all out in the end. "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17
We unfortunately complicate life more than it already is. We wake up and busy ourselves with tasks and responsibilities and start checking things off our very full "to do" lists. We get overwhelmed and frustrated. We feel lost amongst the various of thoughts and emotions that fill our brains and bodies. We bring all of this on ourselves because we fail to keep our eye on three simple actions that God wants us to take each and every day ... Be Joyful (choose the attitude of joy), Be in conversation with God (so He can speak to us and help us out), and Be Grateful (for what we have and don't focus on what we don't.). Lord, help me to keep my eyes on the three things that matter and not spend so much time on the thousands of things that don't. "Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Philippians 4:6
I wish someone would have pointed this verse out to me about 50 years ago. This advice would have saved me a half century of wasted time and unnecessary pain and heartache. Oh well, better late than never. At least the next 50 years will be much better. Lord, I give you my worries and trust that You will help me out with them by either lightening them or providing me peace, ... or both. “And I pray this: that your love will keep on growing in knowledge and every kind of discernment, ..." Philippians 1:9
Unfortunately, we are born with the ability to do one thing ... nothing. Thankfully, we start to figure things out and over time. We start to grow and learn and become somewhat less dependent on others. There is a huge problem with this natural progression, we fall into this false sense that we will "always grow and always effortlessly improve over time". We think that since we get taller with no effort, we will always get taller. Because we are able to come up with ideas and thoughts and remember more things, we mistakenly believe that we will always be able to get smarter and retain information. The sad reality is that at some point, in order to get better, we must put in effort. Just like training for a sport or studying an academic discipline, we must "keep growing" by putting in effort and time into our relationship with Jesus. Lord, life is not always "a straight line moving up and to the right" so help me to be more intentional in my growth. |
