The Right Answer!

“…ready at any time to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.”   – 1 Peter 3:15b

The summer after my freshman year in college, I worked in a warehouse.  About halfway through the summer, an older man who had worked there for decades stopped his forklift in front of me, and asked, "If you died today, would you go to heaven?".  I was a fairly new Christian, so I went into my long testimony that included how I accepted Christ, lead FCA at WSU and went to church every Sunday.  I even through in a couple Bible verses to impress him more.  He was patient and listened and when I was done he said, "That is all great stuff, but none of that will get you to heaven.  You could have simply said a few words ... the Grace of JESUS."  I learned a valuable lesson about what really matters and what I think matters.

Lord, when in doubt, Jesus is the who, what, when, why and how to every question we may ever have.

Who Cares?!

“Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in everything; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

It is funny what we care about.  And it is funny what we THINK God cares about.  We care about our future and our past and our careers and our appearance and our behavior and, unfortunately, we care too much about what others think us and about those things we do.  We also think that God cares about those things, as well.  However, God could NOT care less about our future or our past or what job we have or who we marry or what church we go to.  God cares most that we have a relationship with Him, and that it is demonstrated in three ways ... Being Joyful ALWAYS, Praying ALWAYS and Giving Thanks ALWAYS!  When we focus on those things, then our job and our spouse and our behaviors will take care of themselves.

Lord, thank YOU that YOU care less about what I do and care more that I do it with YOU.

Life Isn't Fair!

“He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”  2 Corinthians 5:21

It is true.  Life is not fair.  If it were, Jesus wouldn't have died on the cross for us when He didn't do anything to deserve it.

Lord, help me to remember that life isn't fair, and feel free to not remind me of it when I forget.

Amazing Grace!

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness.”  2 Corinthians 12:9a

God's grace is enough but for some reason, we don't feel that it is.  That is an "us" problem.  Not a God problem.  It is up to us to both accept Grace from God, but also to be able to give grace to ourselves.

Lord, thank You for Grace!

Not Punishment!

“No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”  Hebrews 12:11

Discipline is not punishment.  Punishment refers to "taking away".  Criminals are punished with fines or imprisonment or both.  Children are punished with spankings or time outs or neither (and that is why we have so many criminals).  Discipline refers to "training" or "teaching" improper behavior by taking something away.  God doesn't hate us, just like parents don't hate their kids.  God loves us and wants us to LEARN from our errors and failures so that our lives have MORE, not less.

Lord, help me to learn better and faster, so I don't require as much "training".

Don't Drink and Live!

“Be sober-minded, be alert. Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour.” 1 Peter 5:8

It's not just about drinking.  Sober minded refers to not being under the influence of anything that distorts our perception or decision making.  It also refers to living with a single-minded focus toward God.  Drinking alcohol doesn't help but also allowing other influences other than God/Jesus to distort our mind, is also dangerous.

Lord, help me to be more aware and careful of what I put into my body and mind.

Really?!

“So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.”  John 8:36

Are you sure?  What's the catch?  There has to be some "non-free" part of this deal.  It is too good to be true.  My college roommate told me that he would pick me up from the airport and didn't.  So God must not mean what He says either.

Lord, thank You that when You say something, I can trust it completely.

Stop Causing Trouble!

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.”  Matthew 5:9

My mom would constantly admonish me and my three older brothers, "Stop Causing Trouble!"  I realized later in life that she wanted us to be a sons of God.

Lord, sorry for causing so much trouble and thanks for Mom.

Tomorrow, Tomorrow, I LOVE You ...

“Let us not love in word or speech, but in action and in truth.”  1 John 3:18

Now that today is almost over, think back and what did you DO for someone else that showed them LOVE?  A kind gesture, an unselfish act, a simple smile or maybe it was something you DIDN"T do or say that showed them love.  Hopefully we can all answer this question.  But if not, the night is still young and there is ALWAYS tomorrow.

Lord, thank You for second chances and help me to take advantage of them.

Nothing!

"The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:14

The most difficult thing to do sometimes is ... NOTHING!  Many of us like to DO.  We love being in CONTROL.  Reality is that there are countless times in our life that require us to be STILL, and WAIT, and be PATIENT.  It the Bible, these words are synonymous and used interchangeably with TRUST!  The Lord has our back, and all we need to do is TRUST, WAIT, BE PATIENT and DO NOTHING!

Lord, help me to understand that You can do much more and much better than I ever could but You will always do things in Your time.  Your answers aren't always NO, they are NOT YET!
